Construction of Washington Park, approximately 25 acres was completed in 1928. And was the first public park opened in Atlanta exclusively for Blacks. This was not just a milestone, but a monumental accomplishment for the Black race. Atlanta’s “extravagant” facility included a dance hall, pavilions, swimming pool and Clay tennis courts. The Park itself was the centerpiece of Heman E. Perry’s unparalleled entrepreneurial efforts to create a fully self- sufficient  and upwardly mobile Community that would offer Black people the opportunity to build and live in quality homes of their own. Perry’s business achievements  and his development of Washington Park is viewed as “a critical chapter in the story of Atlanta.
